Sustainable Lifestyle Choices For Travellers
Updated: Jun 27
As travellers, we have become accustomed to constantly moving from place to place without a real concept of ‘home life’. For many of us, sustainable travel is important. So how can we transition our Eco-friendly travel habits to our current lifestyle at home during and after the global pandemic?
Living out of a #backpack certainly is a unique lifestyle. For the most part, we are thinking of our next mode of transport or where we will sleep for the coming days. So, what do we do when we now find ourselves with a home base? How can we remain #sustainable just like we aim to do on the road?
The exciting thing about staying at home during a time when travel has been placed on hold is that the same sustainable living concepts apply. When we travel and stay in our accommodation, much of what we could usually control at home, is done by someone else. For example, the house cleaning, the laundry, the cooking and so on. We rarely have access to a kitchen of our own so eating out (not ever having to shop, cook or wash up) is the #traveller’s norm.
Every backpacker is used to grabbing some delicious street food on the way out for the day, having coffee in a cosy cafe or meeting friends at the night market for a late night meal! We sleep in a room that has been prepared for us, we share a communal space and just go with the flow. The responsibility of our Eco-friendly travel often relates to the personal products we choose to use and bring with us. Many of us have already transitioned to #reusable cups, bottles, cutlery and bags. Interested? Let's take a moment to see what else can be done from home.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Look at these simple and effective sustainable ‘staying at home’ choices you can make today. Every small change or effort you make either on your own or with your family and friends will have a huge impact on the environment and the community.
No matter where you are in the world, finding a vegan option is easier than ever before. Vegan cafes and restaurants are popping up all over the place! It really is an exciting part of travelling in 2020 with more ways to eat healthy and affordable food available.
Plant-based cooking is simple and healthy. If you are shopping for everyday essential food items, you might be surprised at how much money you can save and the meals you can create. For many, meat, dairy and seafood are luxury items that require us to spend a lot of money (have you seen the price of a steak or a block of cheese in some places) yet items such as beans, rice and lentils usually give you better value for money.
There are plenty of non-perishable items you can purchase which are vegan and all of these ingredients can be turned into a nutritious meal at home. Once you have purchased a few of the basics such as cooking oil, baking goods like flour, yeast, baking powder, and stocked up on essential spices; there is no end to the possible vegan meal options.
Consider adding the following items into your grocery haul and get creative with vegan meals at home:
#Fruit & Vegetables (fresh, preserved, dried, canned, frozen)
#Nuts & Seeds
#Cereals such as oats (instant oats are so easy & can be made with just water)
#Tofu & Tempe
#Coconut Milk (for cooking)
#Long-life Plant Milk (soy, almond, oat, cashew)
#Herbs & Spices (fresh or dried)
Ideas for quick vegan meals:
#Vegan Banana Pancakes (Banana, Plant Milk, Flour, Baking Soda)
#Vegan Fried Rice (Rice, Vegetables)
#Vegan Pasta (Pasta, Sauce, Vegetables)
#Overnight Oats (Oats, Plant Milk, Fruit, Seeds)
#Vegan French Toast (Banana, Bread, Coconut Milk, Maple Syrup)
#Vegan Nachos (bean mix, guacamole, corn tortilla chips)
#Fresh Salad (Add chickpeas, beans, seeds, salad mix)
#Vegan Curry (Add any vegetables, a spice blend & coconut milk)
An amazing variety of Eco-friendly products are available on the market and the best part is that they are affordable! A cleaning product for your home that is friendly to the earth and your health is a wonderful way to remain as sustainable as possible whilst living at home.
